Poetry films:
new hybrid art-form or continued evolution in cross -platform mediated artworks?

when freedom kissed her still from poetry film by p.d. casely-hayfordWhat are poetry films? Some have described them as a new hybrid art form, others see them as an evolution of multimedia poetry, or performance poetry, yet the notion of combining art forms with technology to create new aesthetics is nothing new. Poetry films are slowly being recognised as a new genre of mediated expression, yet the jury is still out on what they are, and how they are categorised. The dogma is still collared.

A poetry film can be described as a combination of the two art forms; poetry and film, in every way imaginable. This generalist description reflects the developing nature of poetry films. So far, poetry films have included any combination of mediated elements; stills, moving pictures, animations, and soundtracks. Some are screenings of poet's reciting their works, reminiscent of performance poetry. Whatever the combination or mode of presentation, the poem's central meaning is given a visual representation, as well as a narrative voice throughout the piece.

The combination of technologies and arts is one of the great signifiers of the twentieth century; mediated creativity. Poetry films are part of the bigger picture of creative collaborations occurring around the world. Another way of finding meaning in life, and sharing our perceptions through art, music and literature.
